So here I want to talk about the differences between these kinds of preparation and what different types of students can realistically expect to gain from them. Short-Term Prep I tend to classify anything from a couple of sessions through about three months as short-term prep. Short-term prep itself falls into two categories: the kind that focuses narrowly on improving a small number of skills, and the kind that focuses primarily on finding strategies that will best leverage the students existing skills. On the whole, I find that short-term prep is most successful for high-scoring students who know their strengths and weaknesses and have identified a few specific goals to accomplish. In my experience and quite contrary to popular test-prep wisdom, it can actually be much simpler to raise a score from somewhere above 650 to an 800 than it can be to raise a 570 to a 650 or even a 610. Theres almost no way to hit the high 600s, or even the mid-600s, without having solid skills, and at that point improving ones score primarily becomes a question of identifying and focusing on a handful of discrete concepts. When a single problem such as timing in involved, it is sometimes enough to work through a representative sampling of questions to illustrate various principles and strategies, which the student can then practice applying independently. Let me give you an example. In the past year, Ive worked with two students who already had 800s in both Math and Writing but whose Reading scores lagged more than 100 points behind. Both of them came to me with very specific issues: one needed work only on timing, so we talked about how getting the gist of each paragraph from reading the first few sentences eliminated the need to waste time trying to comprehend every single word, and about how to identify overall structure quickly by reading topic sentences. The other student needed work understanding hard humanities passages, function (purpose) questions, and big picture questions. The former jumped to an 800 from a 680 after only a single meeting (I had also done a couple of sessions with him months earlier, before the PSAT) and a few practice tests; the latter rose to a 720 from a 650 after about three months of more or less consistent work. We starting off just doing the most difficult humanities passages I could find so he could practice figuring out the important points without getting bogged down in confusing language, then worked up to full tests. Short-Term prep for lower-scoring (below 600) students can be effective, but its maximum benefits tend to show up in the Math and Writing sections, which are rule-based and relatively straightforward. In my experience, it rarely produces the kinds of significant gains in Critical Reading that higher-scoring students see. Here I do have to mention that students with solid skills who are just beginning SAT prep may not score well because they havent learned to transfer their skills to the test; theres often a very big difference between someone who scores a 550 CR on their-first ever practice test and someone whos still scoring 550 after a year of prep. Provided that they are willing to spend lots of time learning vocabulary and do not have difficulty thinking strategically, a student starting at 580 and aiming for a mid-600s score can sometimes learn enough to parlay their skills into a 50-70 point increase in the space of a few months. (If they want to spend more than a couple of months prepping seriously, however, they can often raise their scores well into the 700s). For students scoring persistently below 600 (lets define persistently as after six months or more), however, short-term prep is usually a much dicier prospect. In such cases, a sub-600 score is usually an indicator of multiple missing skills, and the amount of work involved in acquiring those skills is what sets Critical Reading apart from the other two sections. As one article I came across recently termed it, reading is three-dimensional problem. No matter how self-contained a passage may seem, it always has a real-world context; the more familiar the reader is with its subject matter and the conventions of its genre, the faster and easier the reader will be able to understand it. Theres also the decoding aspect: students who never learned to read phonetically are often either stymied by unfamiliar words and will come to a grinding halt when they encounter them, or simply plug in a similar-looking word that causes them to misunderstand the passage. When this type of confusion happens repeatedly, students can end up with only the most fragmentary idea of what theyve read. A lack of familiarity with complex grammatical structures (multiple clauses, non-essential clauses, inverted subject-verb structure, separation of subject and verb within a sentence) and the ability to intuit where a sentence or a paragraph or an argument is going can also severely impede comprehension and make reading an excruciatingly slow and confusing process. The real problem, however, is that fluid comprehension results from the interaction between all of these skills, in ways that researchers do not entirely understand. What researchers do understand, however, is that the relationship between the acquisition of individual skills and overall reading level is exponential. *All* of the skills must reach a critical point before their interaction results in a jump to a noticeably higher level; drilling concepts in a single area has limited effects. And because, as I discussed in my last post, because persistently low scores often result in part from attention and memory as well as self-management difficulties, it can be extraordinarily difficult to find success with a strategy-based approach. Thats not to say that these students cant improve from long-term, skills-based preparation if they are willing to work very, very hard, simply that there are no quick fixes when someone has so many gaps across the board. When the College Board says that test-prep doesnt make much of a difference, this is what they mean, and in this sense I cant help but agree with them. Trying to do short-term prep with a very weak student has made me realize how well-constructed the SAT really is. What seem like simple tricks to a 700-level student are actually huge obstacles to one scoring 250 points lower. Long-Term Prep While long-term prep might seem like the better option (provided that a student has the necessary discipline or the family the means to pay for months and months of tutoring), the reality is that its efficacy varies widely. The most successful students Ive had by far are the ones whose parents came to me with the understanding that test-prep was likely to be a long-term project, one that would require consistent work, and who were actually willing to put in that work or whose parents were willing to force them to put in the work. The father of one of my students kept a massive index-card box full of vocabulary flashcards, with which he would torture his son on a daily basis. It took a year, but he played a huge role in getting his severely ADD (but extremely smart) son from a flat 500 CR to a 670. Let me repeat that, by the way: not a quick fix, a year. This type of prep typically involves acquiring skills that for whatever reason are either not being mastered or not being learned period in school. It also tends to involve some fairly intensive remediation, and that simply takes time. You wouldnt try to learn a years worth of chemistry in one hour a week for a couple of months, would you? So why on earth would you treat the SAT that way. And I would argue that that is in fact a valid analogy: Critical Reading tests concrete, specific comprehension and reasoning skills that can be taught much the way any subject can be taught the only difference is that those skills are not, for the most part, being taught in the classroom, and tutoring must often replace school rather than complement it. I used to argue with Debbie Stier about the amount of time an average student should reasonably expect to spend studying for a 100+ point increase, but having learned the hard way when enough of my mid-range students didnt improve after a couple of months, I now concur with her assessment of a year. Its a safe bet that youll need that long to digest new skills to the point where you can apply them on the fly in a high-pressure situation when youve been up since 6am and are sure that you just completely blew the last section. Trust me: it takes a long time. Given the time, I now treat Reading much the way I used to treat Writing and dont even bother looking at the test until weve worked through the various skills that it involves. It may not be fun to spend a couple of months just discussing how passages are organized (anecdote, commentary, main point, counterargument), but surprisingly enough, its a whole lot easier to transfer skills to a test once you actually have them. For students who start off scoring very well (700+), however, burnout can be a real danger. For them, it makes the most sense to focus in on their weakest areas and spend some time focusing seriously on them rather than take test after test after test for months on end (although granted, if their biggest problem is managing the whole test itself rather than any specific skill, then taking lots of practice test might be just what you need.) There is such thing as a point of diminishing returns, and its not pretty once someone goes too far past it especially if their parents are demanding perfect scores. Ive worked with some kids who kept prepping way past the point where it was beneficial for them to do so, and eventually it got to the point where it felt like an exercise in futility for both of us. They clearly no longer cared, and I was exhausted and increasingly uncomfortable trying to hold their interest when it was obvious they just wanted the whole thing to be over. At a certain point, you either have to put in the effort to really get yourself to the next level or decide that youre happy with what you have. I know that some of you wont believe me, but I feel obligated to reiterate this here: An SAT score is only one part of your application. While a low score can keep you out, a high score will not get you in. No admissions committee at any elite (non-technical) school would take an otherwise undistinguished kid with a 2350 when they could take a kid with a 2250 or, horror, a 2200 and something genuinely interesting to contribute. It is not worth spending all your time trying to get a 2300+ if doing so will come at the expense of other parts of your application. Im not going to say much about medium-term prep here (4-6) months except that Im not a huge fan of it. Like anything else, it can work given the right circumstances, but I find that it occupies and awkward middle ground: it isnt quite long enough to build and solidify skills from the ground up, but its often too long for a kid hovering around the 2200-2250 range and trying to break 2300/2350. If someone wants to spend time just memorizing vocabulary, thats fine, but there are better things to do with ones time than spend months obsessing for the sake of what often comes down to five or six questions on the entire test when simply working more carefully could accomplish the same goal in an afternoon or two. I realize that this post has already become a bit long-winded (try as I might to be succinct, I just cant get past my habitual verbosity what can I say, I like to ramble on), so Ill just say this: Ive seen the greatest number of problems arise when people expect long-term results from short-term prep, so whatever you choose, adjust your expectations accordingly. Take a hard look at your score, your skills, your goals, the amount of work youre honestly willing to put in, and what you want to get out of SAT prep. If you dont want to spend months memorizing vocabulary and your goal is to get the test over with a soon as possible, youre probably best off looking for some short-term strategy-based prep; if youre starting at a 550 and wont settle for anything less than a 700, plan on a year, and expect to do a lot of work. There is no one-size fits all, and the best you can do is to pick the path that most suits your needs and be aware that your score will be a reflection of your choice. lulastewart1910http://www.blogger.com/profile/07017391579231489586noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5739225509475979596.post-21797301391584404952020-05-16T22:05:00.001-07:002020-05-16T22:05:05.404-07:00What Are Your Strengths and Weaknesses Interview Tips for Teachers One interview question that can stump even seasoned job-seeking educators is What is your greatest weakness as a teacher? This question may come at you disguised as What would you most like to change/improve about yourself? or What frustrations did you encounter in your last position? This weakness question really tags as an opportunity to Describe your strengths. Your response can tip the interview in your favor -- or send your resume to the bottom of the pile. Forget Conventional Wisdom In the past conventional wisdom recommended putting a spin on this question by describing an actual strength camouflagedà as a weakness. For example, you might have tried to be clever and offered perfectionism as your weakness, explaining that you refuse to quit until the job gets done right. But in responding to your weaknesses, you should should stay away from any personal qualities. Save your personal qualities such as perfectionism, enthusiasm, creativity, or patience for describing strengths. In responding to a question about a weakness, you should offer more professional traits. For example, you may recall how you noticed your attention to detail, organization, or problem-solving may have needed improvement. Once you have provided the trait, you should provide details on how you purposefully worked to address this weakness. Include any of the steps you have taken or are currently taking to mitigate this weakness. Here are two examples of how you might respond to a question about your greatest weakness. Corrected Weakness: Organization For example, you can state that you have been less excited about the amount of paperwork that comes along with a classroom of students. You may admit that in the past you tended to procrastinate on assessing classwork or homework. You can also admit to having found yourself on more than one occasion scrambling to catch up right before the grading period ended. You might feel like your honesty leaves you vulnerable. But, if you go on to explain that in order to combat this tendency, you set a schedule for yourself this past school year that dedicated time every day to paperwork, you will be viewed as a problem solver. You might include other strategies you used such as self-grading assignments whenever practical, which allowed students to assess their own work as you discussed the answers together in class. As a result, you can acknowledge that you learned to stay on top of your grading and needed a short time at the end of each period to compile the information. For new teachers, examples like this could come from student teaching experiences. Now an interviewer will see you as self-aware and reflective, both highly desirable attributes in a teacher. Corrected Weakness: Seeking advice Teachers are independent, but that can lead to isolation in problem solving, and some problems may necessitate advice from others. This is particularly true in dealing with confrontational situations such as dealing with an irate parent or a teachers aide who arrives late to your class every day. You might admit that you may have tried to solve some problems on your own, but upon reflection, felt it was necessary to seek the advice of others. You can explain how you found the teacher next door to you or an administrator was important in helping you address different kinds of uncomfortable confrontations. If you are an educator looking for first job, you may not have classroom experiences to use as examples. But dealing with confrontations is a life skill and not limited to the school building. In this case, you can provide examples of problem-solving confrontations you may have had at college or at another job. Seeking the advice of others shows that you can identify people or groups that can be resources instead of trying to tackle confrontational problems on your own. Self analysis Employers know job candidates have weaknesses, says Kent McAnally, director of career services at Washburn University. They want to know that we are doing the self-analysis to identify what ours are, he writes for the American Association for Employment in Education. Showing that you are taking steps to improve is essential to making a positive impression, but more importantly, it is essential for developing your personal and professional goals and development plans. And THAT is the real reason for the question. Tips to Master the Interview Be truthful.Do not try to guess what the interviewer wants to hear. Answer questions candidly and present your authentic self.Prepare for the question but do not let your answers sound coached.Remain positive as you explain how your weakness could be seen as a positive in the job.Avoid using negative words like ââ¬Å"weakâ⬠and ââ¬Å"failure.â⬠Smile! lulastewart1910http://www.blogger.com/profile/07017391579231489586noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5739225509475979596.post-75406768536333645482020-05-06T18:28:00.001-07:002020-05-06T18:28:36.953-07:00The Effects Of Binge Drinking On College Students Essay Alcohol has long been a problem for society, and college students are no exception to this problem, especially when it comes to binge drinking. His father died when Andy was at a very young age. Thus, it forced Andy into a deep depression containing lack of self confidence. Much of his young life has been kept secret. However, he did report being very shy and depressed because he never felt comfortable with his homosexuality. His childhood life may have been full of the torture that children threw at him for being the different person he was. He was able to attend college. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in pictorial design from Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1949, he went to New York City with Philip Pearlstein, who was a fellow student that later became a well-known realist painter. In 1960, Warhol finally began to paint in earnest and to view art seriously as a career. He began his career with commercial drawings of womens shoes. In 1961, an early manifestation was his Dick Tracy, an enlarged version of the comic strip that was placed in the window of Lord Taylors department store. He followed in his own footsteps to keep going in the ever-so-famous pop art track. Warhols use of images are so close to the images themselves, thanks to the photographic silkscreen technique, which is a process of applying the same image over and over again without changing the original. In 1963, he began turning film into his next aesthetic. He was the recorder of the world around him. Warhol saw this world as populated by hustlers of various sorts, motivated largely by money and the goods it would buy. Later that next year, he started to experiment in underground film. In the late 70s he began to use sex and nudity to gain attention in his films. Whether this was moral or not; it did, however, work. The rest of his short life was spent visiting with celebrities and keeping up with the worlds times. He tried to understand how the rest of the world saw things, but just never got there. Sadly, Warhol died of a heart failure on March 9, 1987, still wearing his famous blond hair wig. Andys diaries are not actual written records of his day to day accounts, but they are audio recordings of his phone conversations to Pat Hackett every Monday through Friday from Wednesday, November 24, 1976 to Tuesday, February 17, 1987, just weeks before his death. Warhol originally intended these daily records to be documentation of his minor business expenses. He was just audited and felt the need to be extra careful. In a word it was a diary. But whatever its broader objective, its narrow one, to satisfy tax auditors, was always on my mind Warhol xvi. Later on, he felt the diaries were a great way to explain his everyday occurrences for more than a decade of his life. This view of his life from his eyes is probably the most balanced view ever given. He may have changed since the 60s, but it is still the truest representation of Andy, himself. .ub710d2cce456005568d110e0132f4ccc , .ub710d2cce456005568d110e0132f4ccc .postImageUrl , .ub710d2cce456005568d110e0132f4ccc .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ub710d2cce456005568d110e0132f4ccc , .ub710d2cce456005568d110e0132f4ccc:hover , .ub710d2cce456005568d110e0132f4ccc:visited , .ub710d2cce456005568d110e0132f4ccc:active { border:0!important; } .ub710d2cce456005568d110e0132f4ccc .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ub710d2cce456005568d110e0132f4ccc { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ub710d2cce456005568d110e0132f4ccc:active , .ub710d2cce456005568d110e0132f4ccc:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ub710d2cce456005568d110e0132f4ccc .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ub710d2cce456005568d110e0132f4ccc .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ub710d2cce456005568d110e0132f4ccc .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ub710d2cce456005568d110e0132f4ccc .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ub710d2cce456005568d110e0132f4ccc:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ub710d2cce456005568d110e0132f4ccc .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ub710d2cce456005568d110e0132f4ccc .ub710d2cce456005568d110e0132f4ccc-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ub710d2cce456005568d110e0132f4ccc:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Film Analysis The Life of David Gale EssayHe never expressed the key happenings of his life; its as if we, the readers, already knew them. He just usually mentions the quick everyday type things such as a cab ride to uptown New York. The first major influence on Andy Warhols life was the stepping stone of his artistic career, his enrollment in and completion of Carnegie Institute of Technology with a bachelor degree in pictorial design. After graduating he moved out to New York City, where his life blossomed. He lived for a couple of years with Philip Pearlstein, who he had met at school. Warhol, with his education centered around design, set out to begin his career on the right foot. He started doing drawings for advertisements in a womens shoe catalog. It may not have been much to brag about, but it was at least something he could learn and gain from the experience given to him. Andy may have acquired his use of media exploited images through his beginning attempts at commercialism. He knew what sold to society, whether he agreed with it or not. He continued on with simplified pop art and he made it famous. He is the person most people think about when pop art is mentioned. Through his advertising projects, he was conditioned to think only in glorification of people, products, and style. One of his popular works, the silkscreen of the Campbells Soup Can, is an example of this. It is an image that everyone is familiar with, and it is so common that sometimes it is overlooked. Many times, Andy took something simple and glorified it. This is how he made his designing skills useful in promotion. One would compare Warhol to the pictorial hyper-realism of Norman Rockwell, and to the surrealism of Marcel Duchamp, and the radicalism of Jasper Johns Sagan 1. A second major influence in Andy Warhols life is his participation in the underground film scene. It started in 1963, when he called himself the recorder of society around him Moritz 590. He would find people for his movies in a club-type warehouse called Maxs Kansas City. Every night, celebrities of art, fashion, music, and underground film-making crowds gathered in the back corners of Maxs to try their chance at working with Warhol. In 1968, he was nearly killed by a woman who was in one of his short films. She shot him on the side of his chest, but fortunately he was not killed. He still continued to make films; such famous ones are Eat, Haircut, Sleep, Kiss, and Empire. He would make them boring on purpose to possibly prove a point. Again it was glorifying something thought of as being extremely pointless. In the late 70s he began to use sex and nudity, featuring films concerning sexual bondage. He may have been simply looking for a shock value content. Many artists work off shock value, it takes only the true to admit it and still continue with it. The last and most important influence on Warhol was his mother, Julia Warhola. When Andy first arrived in New York, he would share apartments with friends and acquaintances. Eventually he could afford a place of his own. Then his mother suddenly arrived in town and moved in with him. Her reason was to look after him. She would constantly keep an eye out for a wife for Andy. Little did she know he was interested in the opposite sex for marriage. Andy appreciated his mother, and never wanted to explain how she had an impact on him. Maybe it was the fact that she meant well, and tried her hardest to take care of him. She lived with him on 89th Street and Lexington Avenue until 1971. By then, suffering from senility, she required constant care and Andy sent her back to Pittsburgh to be cared for by his two brothers, John and Paul. After suffering a stroke, she died in her nursing home in 1972. Andy did not except the fact too kindly. He would even go as far to say his mother was doing fine, when people would ask about her, even though she had already passed away. Andy stayed quiet and tried to hide himself from the rest of society. He would avoid emotional interaction as much as he could. .u7e8a650436e7ac6f8302df14ebd4de41 , .u7e8a650436e7ac6f8302df14ebd4de41 .postImageUrl , .u7e8a650436e7ac6f8302df14ebd4de41 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u7e8a650436e7ac6f8302df14ebd4de41 , .u7e8a650436e7ac6f8302df14ebd4de41:hover , .u7e8a650436e7ac6f8302df14ebd4de41:visited , .u7e8a650436e7ac6f8302df14ebd4de41:active { border:0!important; } .u7e8a650436e7ac6f8302df14ebd4de41 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u7e8a650436e7ac6f8302df14ebd4de41 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u7e8a650436e7ac6f8302df14ebd4de41:active , .u7e8a650436e7ac6f8302df14ebd4de41:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u7e8a650436e7ac6f8302df14ebd4de41 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u7e8a650436e7ac6f8302df14ebd4de41 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u7e8a650436e7ac6f8302df14ebd4de41 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u7e8a650436e7ac6f8302df14ebd4de41 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u7e8a650436e7ac6f8302df14ebd4de41:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u7e8a650436e7ac6f8302df14ebd4de41 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u7e8a650436e7ac6f8302df14ebd4de41 .u7e8a650436e7ac6f8302df14ebd4de41-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u7e8a650436e7ac6f8302df14ebd4de41:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Procrastination And Sloth The Spice Of Life? EssayHe did this so he could shrink away from human touch Moritz 591. A man who started his life shy and uncomfortable, blossomed into an outspoken artist, now finished his life with feelings even worse than the beginning of his life. After extensive research I found that Andy had much more to his life than I had originally expected. He was involved in the classic rock band The Velvet Underground, with famous singer Lou Reed. He actually even designed a few of the album covers. Most people remember the self-entitled album with the picture of a banana on it. Directly to the left of the banana read the words peel me. If one would peel it, it would reveal the pink insides of a banana. Truly a work of Andy, I must say. Another thing I found was that Andy was not only homosexual, but he was omnisexual. It was rumored he had no problem with sex with anyone or anything. Men, women, animals, you name it, it was probably thought of. And last of all I found he was unusually kind and appreciative to others, especially the ones who worked for him. Pat Hackett, his editor, once said that she has never met a person who says thank you as much as Andy does. Not once have I been more informed on a persons life. In the beginning I thought I knew a lot about. This research on Andy Warhol definitely reinforced my positive view of him. It may have possibly enhanced my appreciation for him as well. I enjoyed the honesty of the entire diary. Nothing was hidden from the reader and I felt as informed as a good friend of his would feel. His life is an interesting one and I believe more people should try to investigate other lives of the unusual. It expands your own viewpoints to accept those of others. Many critics have different viewpoints on Warhols autobiography. He was still appreciated by those who understood his ideas. But he had to have had some sense of history, or he wouldnt have left the diaries behind to try to explain everything to future generations Plagens 1732. Some realize that the diaries are rather boring, but seem to see the true Andy come through in the entries. Despite their virtuoso triviality, their naive snobbery and their incredible length, the diaries are not without a certain charm Amis 1732. Others saw the diaries as a simplistic record of events. His diaries are more or less just records of who went where and did what with whom, that anybody else whod been along could have kept Plagens 1732. Its too bad he didnt start the diaries earlier in his life, such as the 60s, when it would have been more interesting to know what he did and whom he was with, instead of waiting until 1976 to begin Plagens 1732. Some even complained of the editing job done by Pat H ackett. One problem with the diaries is their postmodern polish, such as the casual proofreading and editing Trebay 1732. The reason the editor didnt fit up to par was the mere fact she wanted it to sound how Andy explained the day. still the book is great social history with its lip-smacking tales of loveless, sexless marriages, its gimlet-eyed view of other peoples success, and its rampant unclosetings Trebay 1732. I, myself, found the book very entertaining and a great nonchalant look at the famous and their everyday lives. It may have been organized better and condensed a bit, but none-the-less it was still interesting and kept me reading. lulastewart1910http://www.blogger.com/profile/07017391579231489586noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5739225509475979596.post-28151396097152995522020-03-14T16:08:00.001-07:002020-03-14T16:08:03.142-07:00How to Write a Compare and Contrast Essay All Things ConsideredHow to Write a Compare and Contrast Essay All Things Considered Compare and contrast essay is one of the most widespread types of academic essays. From the high school times, this type of academic writing is used to check the knowledge and understanding of the students on specific topics or issues. Furthermore, compare and contrast essays are meant to show how the students can apply and use the learned material in real life. However, many people are confused with this type of essay as they fail to understand the very title. That is, compare and contrast essay presupposes thorough analysis of similarities and differences between two or more objects or items. Also, you should pay attention to the fact that these papers can be written on any topic in any discipline. Nevertheless, they are mostly used while comparing different theories (philosophy, literature), analyzing historical events, and other. Even though it may usually seem to be difficult to choose the topic for the high-qualitative and informative compare and contrast essay, you should only think more about the material you have covered during the course. Then you should decide on the issue or problem with two opposing views, so there will be differences and similarities to analyze. In order to write an efficient compare and contrast essay, you may look at the next topics for the essay: Differences and Similarities between the Views on Slavery of the Northerners and Southerners of the U.S. During the 18th Century; Compare and Contrast English Renaissance Theater and Italian Renaissance Theater; How the Immigration Policies of European Countries Differ from American Ones? Differences and Similarities between Ancient Greek and Roman Sculpture; Vegans and Vegetarians: Compare and Contrast the Benefits of Two Eating Habits; Compare and Contrast the Impact of a Healthy Lifestyle and Medication on People Suffering from Diabetes; Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle: Whose Wedding Was Better? The Effects of Colonization on Countries of Northern and Latin America; Differences and Similarities of Judaism and Christianity Regarding Godââ¬â¢s Perception; Communism in China and the Soviet Union: Similarities and Differences. Pre-writing Tips from Our Academic Writers As it was already mentioned before, writing a compare and contrast essay is not as challenging as it may seem at first sight. However, you should spend plenty of time on the pre-writing process, which is the preparation phase before actually starting working on the paper. First of all, you should critically analyze the context of the chosen topic. The title of your essay should be clear and concise so that both you and the readers understand what your work is about. For instance, if you are writing about the differences and similarities between the views on slavery of the Northerners and Southerners during the 18th century, you should focus only on the given period. As a result, you will only be able to address the sources, documents, and evidence that talk about the 18th century in the history of the U.S. Here comes the next important step while preparing for writing a compare and contrast essay ââ¬â looking for the appropriate and relevant sources. Directly looking on the Internet for articles that provide you with the list of differences and similarities on the chosen items or issues is not a good idea. Indeed, you should look through the material once again, study the information in details, and look for the controversial points. For example, if you are writing about the Enlightenment movement in the US and France, it becomes evident that the movement had peculiarities in both of these countries because of their different economics, politics, and even societies. As a result, Enlightenment in these countries was developing differently, which, in its turn, changed the development of arts of that period. When it comes to compare and contrast essay writing, you should remember that you will be discussing the differences and similarities. Consequently, it is recommended to draft a short outline before writing the very essay not to forget anything. For instance, you can start with writing out the differences and similarities between the views of Northerners and Southerners on slavery. By having two columns with differences and similarities, you will clearly see the main point of your future essay. In such a way, you will be able to make a coherent and logical structure for this academic writing. Structure One of the main peculiarities of compare and contrast essay is its structure. That is, you will have to discuss the variety of different points which should support your opinion on the issue. Therefore, it is crucial for the flow and the structure of this academic writing work to be logical for you. Thus, it is not going to confuse or mislead the readers. There are two ways of organizing a compare and contrast essay. The first method is called the alternating method. It presupposes that the author of the writing focuses on the points being discussed rather than on the issues or objects that have to be contrasted and compared. That is, you alternate between the compared and contrasted items while talking about a specific point of view. For example, you may discuss the attitudes of Northern and Southern slaveholders to their slaves. While analyzing this point of view, you will talk about both ââ¬â the Northerners and Southerners no matter whether they had similar or different attitudes towards slaves. The next method of organizing a compare and contrast essay is called the block method. It suggests that you should talk about the items being compared rather than on the points of comparison. For instance, in the first few paragraphs of your essay, you will talk about the first item only. In the next paragraphs, you will provide information and discuss the second item. Title/Thesis Statement/Body Paragraphs Introduction In compare and contrast essays, the introduction is usually more extensive as it requires more information to be covered. Nevertheless, you should always provide the necessary background information for either the points of comparison or items being compared and contrasted. It is necessary to make sure that the readers are aware of the context, so they understand all the points you will make throughout the essay. If your essay is informal, you can also include a hook at the beginning of the paragraph to engage with the readers and make them interested in the topic. Usually, a question or a sentence with statistical data can serve as a great hook. For example: 1. Would the US history be different, if Southern slave-owners were as caring and kind to their African Americans workers as the Northerners? 2. According to Jones, 3 millions of slaves died on Southern plantations during the 18th century. Thesis The next significant step is to create a thesis statement. You should remember that the thesis statement is the most important sentence in the introductory paragraph that informs your readers on the topic of your whole essay. That is why it is vitally important to include all the main points in this sentence. In addition, in a compare and contrast essay, your thesis should include both differences and similarities of the compared issues or objects. A good example of a strong and successful thesis statement is the next one: 1. Even though both the Northerners and the Southerners relied on their slaves during the 18th century, the first ones were more kind to their African American workers and supported the idea of liberating them. As you can see, this thesis highlights both similarities and differences of the views of the Northern and Southern residents of the US during the 18th century. On the one hand, the essay shows that both Northerners and Southerners were using slaves in their households, which is a similarity. On the other hand, the author indicates that unlike Southerners, Northerners treated their slaves better. What is more, Northerners were more willing to free their slaves and recognize them as equal citizens of the country. Body Paragraphs You should also consider the fact that each body paragraph should start with a topic sentence. Similarly to the thesis statement, this sentence will reveal the main point of the paragraph. Depending on the structure you have chosen for your compare and contrast essay, the topic sentences may vary. Here you can look at the examples of the correct topic sentences: 1. During the late 18th century, Northern slave-owners cared for their African American workers by providing separate housing for families or couples and even organizing lessons on reading and writing. 2. Comparing to the industrial North, South was agricultural and relied on slaves, which made Southern slave-owners especially cruel to their slaves and unwilling to support the abolitionist movement. Conclusion Finally, in the conclusion section, you should restate your thesis, so that the readers remember it. Furthermore, you should briefly remind about the main points covered in your essay. The last sentence of conclusion has to be strong and include either a general summary of the essay or the implications for the related topics and issues. Introduction Phrases for Comparison Contrast Without a doubt, linking phrases are important in the academic text. However, in compare and contrast essay they are even more important as they help the readers to trace the connection between both the points being made and the items being compared. Moreover, without these phrases, you will not be able to comprehend why this point differs from another one. In such a way, the whole work will lose its meaning and logic. That is why you should pay attention to the special introduction phrases for comparison and contrast that will add flow to your essay. As it was already mentioned before, contrasting two items means looking for the differences between them. Conversely, to compare means to discuss the common things in these items. Thus, the next phrases, linking devices, and constructions will come in handy when writing a compare and contrast essay. On the one hand / on the other hand Conversely Similarly On the contrary / in contrast Comparing to / in comparison to While item A was â⬠¦, the item B was Post-writing Tips Even though many people neglect the post-writing stage of any writing process, you should remember that this stage can significantly improve the quality of your text. As you go through your work a few times, you will be able to find major and minor mistakes. Thus, revising and editing your paper will both help to fix all the mistakes and even avoid them in the future. Revising Revising is a long and complicated process of analyzing and fixing the paper as a whole. However, it is not recommended to start revising the paper immediately after you have finished it. Indeed, you should spend some time being involved in any other activity, so later you can focus on your work and analyze it adequately. First of all, you should check whether you have followed all the instructions to the assignment. For instance, it may deal with such aspects as a genre of the essay, organization, and even the word count. In addition, you should double-check whether your arguments are solid and supported by the relevant pieces of evidence. Among the other parts of the revising process are the number of sources used, proper in-text citations and references, and so on. Editing Editing is the final stage of writing any paper. Although it is considered to be much easier than revising, this process also requires patience and attention. During editing your essay, you should focus on grammar and stylistics of your paper. That is, you should look through any suspiciously long sentences, and the sentence structure in general. It is also essential to fix any spelling mistakes and make sure that you did not miss any article. Finally, you should ensure that the text looks as it has to, with all the indenting, sections, headers, and so on. Fortunately, you can find numerous grammar and spelling checking services on the Internet, which will help you to polish your compare and contrast essay writing. References Compare Contrast Essay. The controversy continues on the critical topic because of the overlap that exists between theory and empirical research. There is much theory, but little research has been done on the topic. For instance, there are only a few documented studies on the effects of sexual assault (Exner & Cummings, 2011). The issue has been denied the attention it deserves like other crimes in the campus environment. This paper will be at analyzing the controversy in sexual assault in campus and the different issues related to it. Sexual assault in campuses is a reality with women being the major victims of this vise. There exist studies exploring gender differences when it comes to sexual assault (Wilcox, Jordan & Pritchard, 2006). These studies have shown that women in college are the main victims; however, the effects are worse to males (Exner & Cummings, 2011). When males are sexually assaulted, the outcomes are severe because of the climate in campus where men have been empowered. Therefore, there is a controversy on the widely affected gender and the intensity of outcomes on the different genders. College populations are said to be major victims of sexual assault because they are in the age group that experiences most of the social activities and dating. Through dating and the social activities, students end up being sexually assaulted by people close to them when they fail to satisfy their wants. According to Casey & Nurius (2006), sexual assault peaks at adolescence. This makes sexual assault to be more prevalent in colleges than in the general population. Substance use is also common among college students (Hayes et al. 2013). This further increases the risk of victimization by reducing the ability to ignore or resist unwanted advances. Statistics, on the other hand, show that a sexual assault in campus is at around 25% with women being major victims of this. The research center further figured out that there are various benefits that can be obtained through smartphones, and these benefits are the primary reason for the high demand of smartphones in the US. Smartphones are not limited to the access of adults; they are even owned and used by several teenagers and the younger generation. Smartphones have gained immense popularity among the youth population because of the several benefits offered by these phones. Itââ¬â¢s a day thatââ¬â¢s the worldââ¬â¢s peace was on the line. The attack on the worldââ¬â¢s trade center proved that terrorism is a real threat in the world. That day I watched TV in shock watching people crying and wailing in pain. Many souls perished in the attack and others were maimed seriously. Counter-terrorism is an action taken to prevent the activities of political groups who use violence to try to achieve their aims. To come up with an effective counter-terrorist strategy, state government need the aim terrorists ââ¬Ë interest and goal in their state and what they aim to achieve in their mission. This analysis entails how terrorism occurs and the strategies that America has taken to counter it and challenges of each strategy. à à à à à à à à à à à The word terrorism originates from the word terrero which is in Latin, meaning fear. Usually terrorists are taken as Middle Eastern men who are motivated by their beliefs to harm innocent people. Unfortunately this vice is diverse, found everywhere in the world and used for any imaginable goal. Mostly terrorists are religiously or politically motivated. There are those homegrown and international. For the homegrown they organize and do it in their country (Cindy C Combs, 2003). à à à à à à à à à à à The word terrorism brings fear into many people while others misunderstand it. Terrorists are usually ideologically motivated whereby they use violence towards civilians so as to create fear and panic hoping to change policies or laws in a given country. There various practices used by terrorists to propagate their activities. One way terrorists is to create civil disorder. This can vary from legal protestation to illegal intimidation to the government. Various countries condone different dissent levels whereas in other peaceful assembly this is taken as terrorism. For sure destructive terrorism forms are religious, political, and quasi political. The political terrorist performs the terrorism hopping to change policies, normally in reference to profession, color or creed. The quasi political terrorism is one whereby terroristââ¬â¢s tactics are used for personal gain. Finally religious terrorism looks at proliferating a personââ¬â¢s belief in the expense of others (Cindy C Combs, 2003). A firm stand should be taken against terrorism since it is very cruel and unjust. à à à à à à à à à à à Terrorism goes in and around diplomatic process with a purpose of disrupting safety and peace so as to achieve a goal. For many terrorists, a mission successful is considered when thousands of helpless, children and women lie as corpses in the streets. What many terrorist do is to set as small bomb maybe in a building which results in killing say, forty people and later detonate a larger bomb when crowd of people, policemen and medics gather to witness the outcome. à à à à à à à à à à à Terrorists attacks have taken place like hundred times in America and the exact figures are not clear since distinction between political violence and the domestic one is blurred. From the year 1999, there have been over fifty terror attacks which are separate, on domestic soil. According to the FBIââ¬â¢s NCTC records, there were over eleven thousand five hundred terror acts in the entire world by the year 2011. These attacks occurred in seventy two countries and led to approximately fifty thousand casualties of which thirteen thousand two hundred of the fifty thousand casualties suffered extreme trauma. à à à à à à à à à à à Each American government agency concerned with counterterrorism, has a purpose in the war against terror. The mission of Federal Bureau of Investigation is to counteract terrorist cells and operatives in United States and to aid in dismantling terrorists networks globally. In United States, numerous agencies including State Department, Department of Homeland Security, Federal Bureau of Investigation and Central Intelligence Agency are mandated to counter terrorism. The main objective of the National Counter-terrorism Center is to orchestrate and integrate the formidable abilities of the American government devoted to defeating the threat of international terrorism and reducing the terror to Unites States interests at home and overseas (Jim S., 2001). à à à à à à à à à à à Counter terrorism strategy was paramount in the US national security even before the September 9/11 attacks. This is depicted whereby from the year 1958 to the year 1999, over forty legal acts dealing with war reinforcement against terrorism in a ranging degree were adopted. This acts brought about empowering of the state authority and also the agencies of law enforcement to detect and also repress the terrorism act in United States and overseas. à à à à à à à à à à à Most of the states use varied goals and sub-goals that dictate their counterterrorism policies. These vary depending on the stateââ¬â¢s economic and political situation. Some of these goals include; preventing the attack, getting rid of terrorists and motivation and minimizing casualties and damages should the terrorist attack occur (Michael B. Kraft, Edward M., 2012). à à à à à à à à à à à Over the decade, United States has had high level of involvement in counter-terrorism actions. The time of struggle during which it fought against terrorism can be divided into two phases: this is after and before the occurrence of the 11th Sep, 2001. Phase one of counterterrorism is in relation to 1980s to 1990s. In this phase there were clear distinguished tendencies such as: use of military forces and new technologies. They used of military forces to fight international terrorist especially bombing their bases and their agencies. One of these operations was held during autumn-inter the year 2001 in Afghanistan. According to Bush G.W, they joined hands with the afghan people to overthrow the Taliban regimeââ¬â the defenders of the al-Qaida network- and supported a new democratic government to rise in its place. In the field of information technology, there has been a defense by the United States: the data system and the supervisory c ontrol that are applied in the oil and gas industries, pharmaceutical. In the water supply system, and in chemicals are very vulnerable since the implementation of the information technology. The attack of computers by viruses will have to play a vital role in military. Moreover, united States plan a major role in helping train new agents for counterterrorism in other countries. à à à à à à à à à à à Phase two started since autumn the year 2001. Thousands of people from eighty eight countries died as a result of 11th September attack. This attack led to the realization of the vulnerability of any country in the hands of terrorist. These have led to expansion of anti-terrorism cooperation in many countries. According to Paul Pillar, CRI agent who is working on Middle East countries and south Asia,ââ¬â¢ the campaign against terrorism must be as diverse as terrorism itselfââ¬â¢. He gave the difference among the following various counterterrorism measures; (1) The diplomacy which recognizes no borders among states, (2) the combination of many measures that complement one another, (3) blocking financial support to terrorists groups or even their sponsoring states. They would also try to track their cash flows though very difficult, (4) use of a considerably weak military force. Terroristic bases are normally not large targets and ther efore easy to destroy unlike the military bases which presents a large stationary, (5) intelligence activity is the most crucial tool to deal with terrorism. The challenge with this tool is that most of the terroristsââ¬â¢ data is fragmented, pregnant with meanings and usually highly questionable, (6) they would also combine different measures which complement each other. à à à à à à à à à à à One of the Americaââ¬â¢s main strategies of combating terrorism is diplomatic actions and economic sanctions against countries that tend to back-up terrorism activities. The best example of this is the United Nations mandating and leading international sanctions against West African countryââ¬âLibya due to the role it played in backing up terrorists who were involved in the bombing of Pan Am 103 in the year 1988.this was the first action that the entire world community took against terrorism. The United States sternly led this action with nations now being aware that US would discipline nations that support terrorism (Spindlove, C. E., 2007).. à à à à à à à à à à à The second strategy which included objectives and policies such strengthening coalitions to beat global terrorism was initiated in the year 2002.the main objective of this strategy is to compel other nationsââ¬â¢ government to indentify and destroy terrorist organizations. For instance, when President George Bush was planning war on Iraq, he encouraged Americans to use the full influence they have and work hand in hand with allies and friends to ensure that all actions of terrorists are illegal so that terrorism is perceived as unacceptable behavior that no reputable government can support. This strategy depicts America as using a policy of global coercion but at the time of this strategy, America was waging a war on Iraq. One of the main challenges of this strategy is that it used weapons of mass destructions and the fear of terrorism to help gain back-up for the war using a policy of ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢your nation is either with us or aga inst us.ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ (Spindlove, C. E., 2007). à à à à à à à à à à à The former U.S.A president said that the United States can no longer rely on deterrence to keep the terrorists at bay or defensive measure to thwart them at the last moment. The fight must be taken to the enemy, to keep them on the run. In order to succeed, America need the support and concert action of friends and allies (Bush G.W., 2010, p.8). Conquered with the president, ââ¬Å"in this task of eradication, ââ¬Å"deterrenceâ⬠is a mere tacticâ⬠¦..to succeed in the long run, however ,the united state must address root causes or a next generation of terrorists will emerge. ââ¬Å"They promised to make better the performance of making of decision, action and also for centralized decisions. They also said that the actions would be decided by those who can understand the political, military and also economic boundaries. They are the central authorities. Broad-front strategy, though seen as unwise and wasteful is what united state s hould conduct. As they have been dealing with issues of terrorists organizations, such as al Qaeda, the U.S.SA as realized that the head or the heat of the beast is never single. This means that the center of gravity to look at when attacking may not be there. Bush G.W. has outlined the main objects in the plan of fighting terrorism in United States. He said that the fight entails use of military force including other national power instruments to kill or catch the terrorists, refuse to give them safe haven, or power over any nation. Block them from getting access to WMD, and obstruct their means of support. This plan is also targeted on continuation of political reforms to guard peaceful Muslims in the whole world in their faith. He also said that responsible Islamic leaders should dissociate from an ideology that alters and exploits the Islam for ends that are destructive and rapes a proud religion. (Bush G.W., 2010, p.23). à à à à à à à à à à à The main counterterrorism plans are based on pre-emption, prevention, consequence management and defense. America is pursuing preemptive and proactive strategies to combat terrorism. The American security strategy is that of protection of its citizens and assets as it sees deterring and defeating terrorists as the ground for this defense. One of the main challenges of these policies is that they have internal conflict within themselves. On one hand, they seek to promote free and open societies globally while on the other hand, they seek to fight tyranny and terrorists. These strategies contradict each other as America is seen as promoting free and open societies while it benefits itself. à à à à à à à à à à à US usually attach much importance to getting from friendly countries rights to use their territory and tools for the USA armed forces, together with making the improved operating basis in dangerous and regions that are unstable. Today American troops are all over in one hundred and thirty countries of the world, in regards to Heritage Foundation. Most of these troops are majored in Arabic countries, together with Iraq base, Qatar, Kuwait and also in UAE (Spindlove, C. E., 2007). à à à à à à à à à à à In conclusion terrorism is a danger to worldââ¬â¢s peace and stability. No groups of people should kill innocent people in the name of religion politics or ethnicity. Instead people from all religions, political or ethnic background should co-exist together and embrace peace. Unfortunately the terrorists consider a mission successful when hundreds of innocent souls lie in pools of blood. World leaders should unite their people and encourage them to shun away from terrorism and other related violence. The Americaââ¬â¢s counterterrorist policy is based on prevention; deterrence, pre-emption and limiting consequences if the act cannot be prevented. It also uses coercion as a strategy to help to strengthen coalitions for its strategies. America feels that exclusive of strong alliances and support from its friends and allies, terrorism will continue to grow and at one point, be a danger to its people and assets. Washington and W. E. B. Du Bois, two distinct figures, whom both found the latter part of the 1800ââ¬â¢s, in need of leadership from within a segmented group of American Society were placed in odds over a single issueâ⬠¦successful racial ââ¬Å"up liftâ⬠for the African American population. As in any case when the attention of the masses is at stake, the titanic collision of honed minds was inevitable. The two men, sought to position their respective plans as the predominate solution to solve racial inequality and achieve racial uplift for population of former slaves and born free citizens in the United States.Booker T. Washington, born into slavery, 1856, for the first nine years of his life, held that the black community must exercise patience. Any abrupt aggressive action by African Americans would be interpreted as threatening by the Caucasian majority therefore inviting justifiable increased discrimination against blacks. Washingtonââ¬â¢s philosophy put f orth the notion that blacks should be willing to sacrifice social and political equality, in exchange for economic liberty. The path to ââ¬Å"up liftingâ⬠would be achieved through fidelity, being trusty worthy and industrial. Born free in 1868, W. E. B. Du Bois was the product of a respectable family that held position in the community of Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Du Bois believed the top ten percent or as he dubbed it ââ¬Å"the talented tenthâ⬠of the African American population should focus all their energy on higher education. The African American intellectuals would then lead the masses to a higher social rung.Protest, challenge, provocation were the watch words for Du Boisââ¬â¢ method. He clearly felt immediate political, social and racial equality was warranted. As stated by Jacqueline M. Moore, author and educator, Booker T. Washington, W. E. B. Du Bois, and the Struggle for Racial Uplift, ââ¬Å"the debate recognized that there were more than two method s of racial upliftâ⬠(Moore, p. 89) Washingtonââ¬â¢s views, was somewhat misconstrued to believe he was ââ¬Å"selling outâ⬠to the majority of American Society. While he felt that African Americans should not push themselves into unwelcome arenas, he knew that political accomplishments were short lived and whimsical. His confidence was in the economical and financial gains that were long term and wielded tangible influence. Washington was clever enough to quietly lobby majority law makers and civic organizations in behind scene efforts to garner support for African American enfranchisement. Even more astute by Washington was his ability to fund his educational agenda from wealthy financial supporters.Du Bois took the position that Caucasian America should be held at an arms distance, neither rejecting nor embracing. He felt the way to eliminate tension between the races was to create a synergy between being African Americans and the rest of America by utilizing the tale nts of the so called ââ¬Å"Talented Tenthâ⬠to spearhead the struggle for national racial equality. Thru Du boisââ¬â¢ multiple initiatives to further promote his cause, ââ¬Å"encouraging action and open protest to challenge racism and discriminationâ⬠(Moore, p. 78) were standard in his approach.Washington was convinced through hard work and the financial success of entrepreneurial enterprises, respect and equality would be gained for African Americans and ââ¬Å"up liftingâ⬠of the race would be a natural evolutionary process. Clearly because of his experiences as a former slave, Washingtonââ¬â¢s philosophy was shaped by determination and work ethic. Educated at Hampton Institute, a vocational institution, described as ââ¬Å"progressive, training people for skilled work. â⬠(Moore, 21), was the capstone of Washingtonââ¬â¢s desire to continue educating African Americans in skilled trades. In direct opposition to Washingtonââ¬â¢s vision of an industr ial educated populace that would improve thru commerce, Du Boisââ¬â¢ selected ââ¬Å"Talented Tenthâ⬠would ââ¬Å"help others to fight for the rights for the raceâ⬠(Moore, 62) with their knowledge of modern society. This type of comparison epitomizes the differences of the two visionaries, however Washingtonââ¬â¢s approach is accurate as well as brilliant, ââ¬Å"Under the guise of maintaining the social hierarchy, [he] was able to create a strong, independent, black-run institutionâ⬠(Moore, 28).While outwardly going along with the status quo, Washington tacitly used his economic prowess to build a tangible independent entity capable of choosing its own destiny and purpose. All the while Du Bois relied solely on rhetoric and the intellectual elite to build his constituency to improve the status of African Americans. Judging from racial attitudes in seemly integrated Great Barrington, Massachusetts, Du Bois was denied community sponsored scholarship to Harvard University. Further acknowledgement of the less than ideal racial setting, Du Bois attended integrated schools, ââ¬Å"adult blacks and whites did not mingle socially,â⬠(Moore, 39).Historically African American college Fisk University did offer him a scholarship. Author Jacqueline M. Moore was injudicious in her conclusion, ââ¬Å"he (Washington) was the only one capable of negotiating with both the white North and the white South and that outspoken protest would simply make matters worseâ⬠(Moore, 68). Mistaking his silence for weakness overlooks effective lobbying in politics and underlying influence in advancing the African American race. Du Boisââ¬â¢ stance towards racial equality is the central criticism of Washington.Du Bois felt that Washington was allowing Caucasian America ââ¬Å"off the hookâ⬠of responsibility. While they both agreed institutional segregation had to end, Du bois felt strongly that African Americans were owed assistance from the general s ociety. ââ¬Å"Solving the race problem required everyoneââ¬â¢s involvement (Moore, 72). â⬠Washington chose self ââ¬Å"up liftâ⬠from the collective boot straps. Clearly Washingtonââ¬â¢s experience as an ex-slave impacted his work ethic and decision making process and shaped his views of how African Americans should advance the struggle for equality.Comparatively Du Bois argued that Washington was subservient toward the majority rule and racial discrimination. Racial discrimination and violence was at an all time high, however Du Boisââ¬â¢ model for protest, higher education, and a demand for immediate social and political equality was hollow without effective means. The establishment of several civic and social organizations by Du Bois could only voice outrage and indignation. There was no real force behind the effort to motivate people to change on both sides of the racial divide.Washington was widely accused of pandering and compromising by contemporaries as well as scholars of today. What is clearly overlooked is Washington uncanny foresight of recognizing the importance of financial and economic gains over social gains, ââ¬Å"Blacks would agree not to push for social and political equality if whites would agree not to exclude them from economic progressâ⬠(Moore, 33). This statement alone underscores his ability to correctly comprehend what drives a capitalistic society, even in the early 1900ââ¬â¢s, and to predict the necessary tool for the future is clearly defined as economic progress.Another popular misconception was that Washington focused on presenting African Americans as well dressed, polite educated puppets that could ââ¬Å"discussâ⬠the plight of their people with out offending the listening audience. The message would be a softer, more acceptable presentation for the gentile surrounding. While that may have been an actual tactic used by Washington, it was only a well thought maneuver to fund his educational i nstitution, Tuskegee Institute, by well heeled benefactors. He now favored influence as well as philanthropic support that would educate the next generation of resourceful, independent entrepreneurs. If his vision had been realized, financially successful enterprises started in 1900ââ¬â¢s possibly could have survived today or subsidiaries that would be in existence to hire the todayââ¬â¢s African American professionals at all levels. Once could only imagine the business knowledge gained and economic success of competitive entities started during the industrial age. Washington may have sacrificed some short lived dignity, but he realized that un-restrain economic growth is tangible and sustains while intellectual accomplishments does not protect or shelter. In the final analysis, the examination of how Du Bois and Washington sought out a collective political, social and economical agenda in the midst of national racial turmoil during the turn of the century is an interesting anal ogy of todayââ¬â¢s civil rights leadership agenda. Washingtonââ¬â¢s method was clearly the most beneficial for the improvement of African Americans for then as well as today. Promoting economic success was the most fundamental element in the struggle for racial uplift.Understanding and able to recognize the changing economic conditions would allow the national objective of racial equality to be the sole issue versus both combined as they are today. As an active participant in the industrial revolution, Washington recognized success as access to business opportunities with a foundation in industrial education. Compared to modern day choices, ground floor Internet opportunity or NAACP internship? Washingtonââ¬â¢s was option was clearly the proper path, noted by the number of successful African American business that flourished during segregation, i.e. Johnson Publishing, A. G. Gaston Insurance, Motown, etc compared full to racial integration era business successes they remain in African American control. Even though African Americans had limited political power and remained segregated socially, pure economic growth would have accelerated true racial uplift and the issue of economical inequality would have been an issue of the past. In most states the only way for juveniles to be tried as adults is if they are over the age of 16 or if they have committed a violent crime such as rape or assault but recently many juveniles are being tried as adults for even far lesser crimes. It also has been well documented for a number of years that juvenile offenders that are at an adolescent age are not built or even wired to handle the extraneous environment that takes place throughout an adult prison , and it often leaves many juvenile offenders to commit suicide under such intense pressure at an young age. ââ¬Å"Analyzing data collected by Her Majesty s Prison Service, the Trust found that while people aged 13 to 21 made up only 13% of the prison population, they comprised 77% of all suicide deathsâ⬠(Zidenberg and Schiraldi , 1998). The juvenile justice system has created a way of separating adults from the youth and it is absolutely essential in ensuring that they will not be victimized or manipulated as opposed to if they were to be locked in prison or jail and treated as if they were adults. ââ¬Å"A Justice Department study done in 1981 showed that the suicide rate of juveniles in adult jails is 7.7 times higher than that of youth juvenile detention centers.â⬠( Zidenberg and Schiraldi, 1998) emphasize thatShow MoreRelatedThe Juvenile Justice System And Juvenile Offenders941 Words à |à 4 Pageswhich the juvenile justice system responds to female offenders. The answer to this question can be related back to psychology. Psychology is the study of the complex functions of the human brain, which tells a person how to react, what to feel, what to think, along with so many other functions. Everything people do can be explained by psychology. I can relate experiences in my life to several psychology concepts including Piagetââ¬â¢s stages of cognitive development, psychoactive drugs, and dreams. The first concept that I can relate to is Piagetââ¬â¢s stages of cognitive development. Jean Piaget came up with this concept about how a childââ¬â¢s brain develops throughout their life. There are four stages: sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, and formal operational. The two stages I can specifically relate to are the sensorimotor and preoperational stages. I have a three year old cousin who I have babysat for since she was only a few months old. The first p art of her life I observed her during the sensorimotor stage. This stage is from birth to two years old and the child experiences the world through their senses. During this stage she would love looking at brightly colored objects and she loved listening to music. She would often put things in her mouth as a way of trying to figure out what it was. I also noticed that she didnââ¬â¢t have object permanence because whenever I left the room she would cry thinking I wasnââ¬â¢t there anymore. He was a very bright student, who had his PhD by the age of twenty-two. Piaget studied child psychology and concrete operations which lead to his theory of the four stages of cognitive development. These stages are still used now in preschool and elementary grade set-ups. The first stage in his theory is the sensorimotor stage which last roughly from birth to about two years of age. He believed that each child matured and learned at a different rate, so even though children mature in the same cognitive sequence, there might be separation in the achievement of each level from one child to the next (Swartwood, 2012, p. 46). For some, it can take a long time to adjust, while others can come out on top quicker. It was a normal feeling Friday when I woke up on January 26th, 2007, but little did I know this would be the biggest challenge that I have ever had to face. We will write a custom essay sample on Compartment Syndrome or any similar topic only for you Order Now ââ¬Å"Ringâ⬠¦. ringâ⬠¦.. ring,â⬠the school bell rang deafeningly through the gymnasium. It was first period, and the first class on my agenda for the day was my personal favorite, ââ¬Å"P. E. â⬠, short for Physical Education. The class started out with our muscle-loosening stretches, and then moved on to one of my all-time favorite sports, basketball. The sparkling, brand new ââ¬Å"Kobe Bryant 8ââ¬â¢sâ⬠were a necessity for my feet in order to play. As I was tying the knots to begin, my best friend Ryan Decker glided swiftly into class with his ââ¬Å"Heelyââ¬â¢sâ⬠, which are shoes made with a wheel incorporated into the sole of the shoe. What did I do, when I first spotted them? I asked him if I could try them on and roll around the gymnasium, because the slick floor provides a perfect surface for rolling around on. As I was rolling around, a basketball rolled in between my feet. I stared at it, and thought about it for a couple seconds. I thought to myself, ââ¬Å"How cool would it be to roll from one side to the other, then shoot a layup right into the basket? â⬠Step by step, glide by glide, I was gaining speed. ââ¬Å"BOOM! â⬠Before I could even comprehend what happened, I glared down at a surging pain that vibrated through my whole body, mainly sourcing from my left ankle. My ankle was completely turned backwards. I frantically yelled out to my instructor, ââ¬Å"MY ANKLE IS BROKEN! â⬠As he sprinted over to the other side of the gymnasium where I was laying in agony, I could see an audience starting to gather. He informed me that the ambulance was on its way and that my mother had been notified. Five minutes later, the ambulance arrived to my side. Before I knew it, I was placed into the ambulance, and I was on my way to seek urgent medical attention. Within four hours, I went through multiple x-rays, took a bunch of ain-killers, and a vibrant green colored cast was placed onto the lower half of my leg. Unfortunately enough, I had suffered a double break through my tibia, which is the second biggest bone in the human body, next to the femur. I thought to myself about all the consequences this would cause and how it would interfere with my everyday life. After a long ride home with my mother, I finally saw my house in the distance; I was home. Wit h my leg still screaming with pain, I wondered why the pain was still so severe, even with the help of the pain killers. I kept on repeating to my parents that I was still in excruciating pain. The pain was so unbearable that I couldnââ¬â¢t keep my mind off of it. This continued on for a couple days, but then something went terribly wrong. I tried to wiggle my toes to see if my movement was still there, but it wasnââ¬â¢t. Over and over again, I kept trying to move them and then I came to realize all of the movement in my foot was gone. I finally communicated to my parents that there was really something bad going on and that I needed to get rushed back to the hospital for a checkup. After impatiently waiting in the waiting room for about an hour, I the doctor finally arrived to escort the family and I to the testing room. Then the worst words, that I will never forget came out of her mouth. ââ¬Å"Robertâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ¦I made a mistake when I diagnosed you with a broken ankleâ⬠¦you have suffered from a condition called compartment syndrome. â⬠ââ¬Å"Compartment syndrome is a limb threatening and life threatening condition, defined as the compression of nerves, blood vessels, and muscle inside a closed space (compartment[-gt;0]) within the body. This leads to tissue death from lack of oxygenation due to the blood vessels being compressed by the raised pressure within the compartmentâ⬠(PubMed). All of a sudden, the doctor said I needed to be placed into surgery immediately before the condition worsened. I kept thinking about my future in school, sports, and most importantly my health. My education was in path to become a big failure, sports was not going to be a significant part of my life anymore, and hopefully my leg was still going to be attached to my body by the end of this. After a successful surgery of putting in screws through my thick tibia bone, adding new tendons from a cadaver, and fixing it cosmetically, I finally woke up from the anesthesia. Movements with my ankle hurt like hell, but I didnââ¬â¢t even seem to care because I was able to regain movement and at least half of my feeling back. Eight weeks passed by, and I was finally able to start my physical therapy training to try and overcome this beast of an incident. The physical therapist first instructed me to walk down the hallway on about fifty percent of my weight. As I was taking my second step I heard and felt a click in my ankle. The stitches holding my tendons together into place ripped through them like a soft cheese. I again was not able to move any part to my foot and ankle. I was back to square one once again. I was not physically and mentally prepared for something this bad to happen. I was going to have to go under the knife once more to fix this mess of an injury. This same instance of ripping through the cadaverââ¬â¢s tendon in my ankle happened five more times before I was fully healed. But what does fully healed mean? Fully healed to me, meant nothing because of everything I went through to get to this point. No student should have to miss 3 months of school in one school year and have to be strayed from any scholastic activities for that long. No athlete should have to miss a whole season and championship run because of an injury. Lastly no human being should have to worry about their health and their chance of living at the age of fifteen. At the end of this challenge, I had to go through seven surgeries, when really it shouldââ¬â¢ve only taken about two. Because the doctor never tested my ankle for compartment syndrome, I had to suffer. What did suffering do to me in the long run? It turned me into who I am today. A young man who feels like he can make his was through any adversity, problems, or change. When something bad happens to yourself, you are given two choices: either to react in a manner aiming to better yourself from the situation, or to grieve and stay emotionally broken. Always keep your head up, and never think the worst because it can always get better with the right attitude. I am now right back on track with my education, and the ankle feels better than ever. Never again, will I ever put on another pair of ââ¬Å"Heelyââ¬â¢sâ⬠in my life. The art of being able to balance change is something that I believe has transformed me into the person I am today and the person I am going to be. Works Cited: Board, A. D. A. M. Editorial.
